LOCATION – MAP

Kenya is known for its vast diversity of wildlife and given the size of the national parks; animals are easier to spot in comparison to some of the larger national parks such as Serengeti. Imagine being able to see a lion right in front of you, with its majestic mane and loud roar playing true to his ‘King of the Jungle’ label. What about the flamingos speckled across the horizon of Lake Manyara, proudly displaying their pink plumage? If you’d like to be a witness to the Great Migration, come down to Kenya to spot the wildebeest stampeding over the river crossing as they come up in search of greener pastures from Serengeti in Tanzania during the dry season.

ITINERARY

Day 1 – Touchdown Africa

Touchdown Africa! Whether or not this is your first time in Africa, you are filled with a renewed sense of excitement of being in this new place. Nairobi’s bustling airport intermingled with different cultures is fascinating, and as you make your way to your hotel with your guide, take in all the senses surrounding you. Today you can either relax and unwind at the hotel, or time permitting, you can also request to head out to Nairobi National Park or the Giraffe Park for an immediate wildlife safari; both popular areas to spot some beautiful wildlife.

Day 2 – Your First Taste of the Wild

Samburu National Reserve. In contrast to Masai Mara National Reserve, this park may be less commercialised, but the sights to see here are well worth your visit. Plus, what better way to start your safari experience than spotting the rare animals alongside the big 5?

Arriving in time for lunch, breathe in the savannah air as you’re welcomed into your luxury camp. Your afternoon safari will be the first of the many to come, and this is where you’ll be able to spot some of the amazing wildlife out there in Samburu. From the famous Samburu leopards, to the variety of bird species, and the unique wild animals you can’t spot in the other national parks like the Somali Ostrich, this wildlife encounter will truly be a one-of-a-kind.

At the end of your day’s excitement, take in the savannah sunset glow as you make your way back to camp. At this point in time as the sunset turns to dusk, you’ll notice the stars begin to show up one by one, and soon you’ll see that there’s no match anywhere to the starry night sky of the wild. Dine under the stars tonight to a scrumptious meal, before sleeping to the sounds of the savannah and rest for the following day.

Day 3 – Samburu’s Stunning Wildlife Experiences

There’s nothing quite like a full safari in the wild. The warm African sun, the dusty earth, and the savannah grasslands – all tell-tale signs that you are in this foreign land. Samburu’s leopards may be famous alongside the rare-to-spot animals as mentioned earlier, but keep your eyes peeled for the rest of the big 5 too! This is your chance to experience Samburu for all that it is.

Fun fact: If you’ve seen the movie ‘Born Free’ or read the book, this is one of the two spots where wildlife conservationists Joy and George Adamson raised Elsa the lioness.

Day 4 – Lake Nakuru

Let your wildlife journey continue from Samburu National Reserve to Lake Nakuru. As you bid adios to what’s been home for the last two days, look forward to what Lake Nakuru will offer to you, as you drive through the scenic Aberdare mountains and descend into the Great Rift Valley. Lake Nakuru is an ideal stopover between Samburu National Reserve and Masai Mara given its location, and it’s also the perfect place to spot flamingos! Be blown away by the vast array of the pink speckles across the horizon as far as the eye can see at Lake Nakuru.

Imagine the late afternoon light, sunny and bright turning into golden as you make your way to the lake, with the display of pink plumage of the beautiful flamingos. Plus, there’s more to witness in this area, from a vast array of unique birds to small mammal species. Whichever animal you spot, Lake Nakuru is the perfect place to let your heart take a beat before your next wildlife adventure the following day. And where are you off to you ask? Nowhere else but the most National Reserve in all of Kenya – the Masai Mara.

Day 5 – Masai Mara

Driving to Masai Mara is an experience in itself. The drive through to the Mara provides you with golden opportunities to witness stunning views of the Great Rift Valley. Your guide will also take you to Narok on the way, which is your chance to visit a Masai village and learn about the Masai culture.

Arriving just in time for lunch, you’ll be greeted by the warm hospitality of the local staff and truly welcomed to the Masai Mara. Let yourself unwind in the warmth of the bush, and try not to rush through lunch in excitement for your safari!

Take in the sounds and smells of the savannah, as you encounter the wild in Mara. Maybe you’ll spot the famous cheetahs known to Masai Mara, as they make their hunts in the late-afternoon light. Or maybe you’ll spot a lion lazing away in the sun after a heavy lunch. Whichever wildlife experience you have, breathe it all in and savour these moments because at the end of the day, Masai Mara is not a place, it’s an experience that’ll change your life. There’s nothing quite like being out in the savannah, with the serenity of the air letting your heart just breathe and relax and being able to witness all the animal sights in their natural element.

Day 6 – A Full Day Affair in the Famous Masai Mara

There’s nothing like waking up to the sounds of the wild in the Masai Mara. Imagine hearing a bird or two, the sound of a hippo grunting in the nearby river, the call of the warthog families, all greeting you another beautiful day out in the wild.

Today will be your chance to explore more of the game reserve, or if you’d like, you can opt for a hot air balloon safari to witness the sights of the savannah from the skies.*

This might be the day you spot a leopard making its way up a tree after its kill. Or maybe you’ll be able to see elephants taking their mid-morning bath in the river, playful in their actions. Or maybe you’ll see one of the birds of prey out for a kill; another unique and underrated experience in the savannah. The best part about the wild is the unexpected, so expect the unexpected as you head out today.

*To book for a hot air balloon safari, note that this would need to be booked beforehand with Kannagara Safaris in order to confirm availability.

Day 9 – Goodbye Mara, Hello Nairobi

Sadly, it’s time to pack your bags and bid adieu to Masai Mara. With one last mini-safari in the early morning as your guide takes you back to Nairobi, relish in all the memories you’ve made over the last week, and we hope to welcome you again soon to Kenya with Kannagara Safaris!

If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together

My fondest memory was sitting under the stars overlooking the river Nile with the open fire log and eating chocolate and singing songs. I am really grateful to this. It is a trip which I can guarantee to be filled with fun, laughter, joy and tears of emotions as you look back at your roots
